The community as a whole will benefit.  The proposed development could be the catalyst that will begin to restore civic pride, increase community participation and provide regeneration to an area that as previously stated is one of the most deprived wards in the county.

Local schools will be able to utilise the sporting facilities to enhance their physical education programme and for the promotion of healthy living and healthy lifestyles.  The youth of the area will have a facility that will help integrate them into the community, promoting social inclusion, whilst enabling them to develop their sporting skills and enhancing their future potential.  The players and coaches of the rugby and cricket clubs will be able to train, play and recruit on an equal basis with other clubs in the borough, as they will also have access to upgraded sporting and changing facilities.  Both sets of coaches will have a base from which they can access further training in order to obtain more advanced coaching qualifications.  The senior players in both clubs will also be able to access nationally recognised coaching qualifications which will enable them to disseminate their coaching skills to junior members.

Sport England have recognised the sporting depravation in our project’s catchment area by including it in their Priority Area Initiative which is aimed at alleviating sporting depravation in areas of greatest need.

Sports & Recreation

Sports and recreation underpin peoples’ quality of life.  We believe that this development will help to deliver Government objectives by providing a well-designed scheme that will help to improve the lives of the people who live in the locality.  These include:

a)           Urban rebirth – local networks of high quality and well maintained open spaces, sports and recreational facilities that help to create urban environments that are attractive, clean and safe.  Green spaces in urban areas perform vital functions as areas of nature, conservation and biodiversity and by acting as ‘Green Lungs’ can assist in meeting objectives to improve air quality.  We will help to meet this objective by the planting of trees in the garden and around the practice nets.  These will include Willow and fruit trees, (to create a mini orchard) and the planting of a Hawthorn Hedge around the boundary of the site.  The garden will have a very ‘natural’ feel and will be used by local schools for science projects.  This work will be undertaken by Groundwork Trust.

b)          Social inclusion and community cohesion – well planned and maintained open spaces and good quality sports and recreational facilities can play a major part in improving people’s sense of well being and ownership in the place in which they live.  As a focal point for community sports activities they can bring together members of deprived communities and provide opportunities for people for social interaction.

c)           Health and Well-being – sports and recreational facilities have a vital role to play in promoting healthy living and preventing illness as well as the social development of children of all ages through play, sporting activities and interaction with others.  Our development will help to assist the ‘Playstation Generation’ to become aware of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and therefore help to reduce the levels of child obesity.
